Botox is the most common aesthetic treatment, with more than six million treatments administered every year! The popularity of Botox likely originates from its effectiveness; results can be seen almost immediately, and last for months afterward. Botox is also considered a very safe treatment for a variety of conditions, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and excessive sweating. It has even been used to treat migraine headaches!
How it works. Botox is actually derived from the Clostridium botulinum organism, and is actually a neurotoxin. However, it is perfectly safe when used in very small amounts. We inject Botox into the muscles around fine lines and wrinkles, where it then paralyzes the nerves and causes the muscles to relax. This method is highly effective at smoothing the complexion and ridding the patient of angry, pinched, or sad expressions.
Botox can be used to treat:
- spasms of the eyelid (blepharospasm)
- dystonia of the neck and shoulder muscles
- chronic migraines
- excessive sweating
- crossed eyes (strabismus)
- hemifacial spasm
- and of course, crow’s feet and frown lines!

Botox is approved for the above uses, but physicians sometimes use Botox off-label to treat other conditions such as hypersalivation, allergic rhinitis, difficulty swallowing, anal fissures, and more. As you can see, Botox is extremely popular and versatile!
How it works. On the day of your appointment, we use a series of injections to place Botox in the correct places, into the muscles under your skin. After about 24-72 hours, you will begin to notice the effects of Botox, as the nerve synapses are interrupted. At this point you will notice a smoothing of the treated area, as the muscles begin to relax. The results will last up to six months, at which point you might choose to repeat the procedure.
In rare cases we do see side effects from Botox, although the vast majority of these are very mild. Schedule an appointment with us, and we can discuss your concerns and help you decide whether Botox is right for you.
