Hot Temps Don’t Have to Cool Down Your Workouts

Summers in southern California are notoriously hot, especially now that we’re well into July. Walking might be a cornerstone of your exercise routine and medical weight loss strategy, but in these scorching temperatures, your refreshing stroll can turn into a sweaty ordeal. How can you maintain your daily step count while staying comfortable and safe? Here are some tips to keep you moving:

Change Your Schedule
To avoid the peak heat of the day, try shifting your walks to earlier in the morning or later in the evening. The cooler temperatures during these times make it more pleasant to fit in extra mileage.

Invest in a Stepper
If a full treadmill isn’t feasible, consider investing in a stepper machine. These compact devices can be used almost anywhere, allowing you to get your steps in without braving the outdoor heat.

Try the Parking Garage
Parking garages offer shade, making them cooler than open, sunny spaces. Take advantage of this by walking in a parking garage before or after work, or even during your lunch break.

Head Indoors
Shopping malls are perfect for walking in a cool, air-conditioned environment. Additionally, many gyms feature indoor walking tracks, and you can even walk around the gymnasium during your kids’ sports practices.

Do Something Else
If an indoor track isn’t accessible, consider alternative cardio exercises like using a stationary bike or elliptical machine. And of course, walking on a treadmill still counts towards your step goals!

Sub in More Steps Elsewhere
Incorporate extra steps throughout your day: park farther from entrances, take a lap around the office building before heading inside in the mornings, and choose stairs over elevators. These small changes add up, making occasional rest days less impactful on your fitness plan.

Watch the Weather Forecast
Stay informed about the weather and avoid outdoor activities when the heat index is very high. When temperatures soar above 91°F, take extra precautions. These are perfect days to plan as rest days or to follow some of the above indoor suggestions.

Hydrate!
Dehydration occurs more quickly in hot weather, so it’s crucial to stay hydrated. Always carry water with you and drink frequently to maintain your health and safety.

Summer heat doesn’t have to derail your fitness routine. By adapting your schedule, exploring alternative exercise options, and staying vigilant about hydration, you can continue to meet your fitness goals safely.
