How Facial Aging Affects Men and Women Differently

Everyone’s face changes with age, but those changes do not always happen in the same way for men and women. Differences in skin thickness, facial structure, hormones, fat distribution, and muscle mass can influence where signs of aging appear and how noticeable they become. Understanding these differences can also help patients choose aesthetic treatments that complement their natural features rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Men typically have thicker skin and higher collagen density than women. This can help the skin maintain firmness for longer, but when wrinkles do develop, they may appear deeper and more pronounced. Men also tend to have stronger facial muscles and more prominent bone structure, particularly around the brow and jaw. Repeated muscle movement can eventually contribute to noticeable forehead lines, crow’s feet, and deep creases between the eyebrows.

Women often experience changes in the skin somewhat earlier, particularly as hormone levels begin shifting with age. Declining estrogen can affect collagen production, skin thickness, hydration, and elasticity. As a result, fine lines, dryness, and skin laxity may become more noticeable. Volume loss in the cheeks and midface can also contribute to folds around the nose and mouth and changes in facial contours.

Fat distribution matters too. Both men and women lose facial volume with age, but the visual effects can differ depending on underlying facial structure. A woman may notice flatter cheeks or changes around the lips, while a man might become more concerned about deeper folds, hollowing, or loss of definition in areas that once gave the face a stronger appearance.

These differences are one reason aesthetic treatments should be customized to the individual. Getting Botox in Chino can soften dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions, but injection patterns and amounts may differ depending on muscle strength, facial proportions, and the desired result. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm can restore volume or enhance contours, but placement should likewise reflect each patient’s natural anatomy and goals.

Most importantly, aesthetic treatment does not have to mean dramatically changing the way you look. The goal can simply be to soften certain signs of aging, restore balance, and help your appearance better reflect how you feel.
