Rowing Machines Can Provide Terrific Workouts!

We often focus our exercise blogs around walking, because it’s one of the easiest workouts that most people can fit into their schedules. But if you’re more of a gym goer, or you’re simply looking for something new to shake up your exercise routine, you might be wondering about the effectiveness of various pieces of gym equipment. So we wanted to take a moment to put in a good word for rowing machines.

Rowing machines tend to be overlooked, as so many of us focus on treadmills, stationary bikes, and elliptical machines. But in case you’re wondering: Yes, a rowing machine can give you a terrific workout and support your weight loss plan!

In fact, adding the rowing machine to your rotation of different forms of exercise can be valuable in numerous ways:

Break up the boredom. Rowing is a very different exercise than walking, biking, or using an elliptical machine. So if you’re feeling bored with your workout, give rowing a try.

Work a different set of muscles. Rowing works a different set of muscles than other exercise machines, meaning it will pose a greater challenge to your body and increase overall fitness.

Rowing engages about 85 percent of your body’s muscles. Because it works your arms, shoulders, back, abs, legs, and more, rowing provides a complete full-body workout. And that means it burns a significant amount of calories (about 600 calories in a one-hour session).

Lower your impact. Because rowing isn’t a weight-bearing, pounding exercise, you can give your joints a break.

Give yourself a great cardio workout. Rowing is a cardio workout, so it’s good for your heart. And it will help you improve your times at other forms of cardio exercise.

It’s easy to see how rowing machines can support your weight loss plan and overall fitness. But as with any other form of exercise, remember to use the machine correctly so that you avoid injuries and gain maximum impact from workouts. Ask your gym employees or personal trainer for a demonstration, and give us a call if you have any other questions about exercise or your weight loss plan.
